The traditional colors used by the Hawaiians in featherwork were yellow, red, green, and black. Throughout Polynesia, red was the most prized color reserved for the high chiefs and the gods. However, yellow eventually superseded red as the most prized color in Hawai’i even though fewer yellow feathers were available. Today, other colors, as well as the traditional colors, are still used in feather lei.
